I was in my history 18 class today and we were in group discussions about the three major groups of people that had a stake in the outcome of reconstruction.
So I made a comment about what we now think of as the Democratic party was the Republican party now and the Republican party now is what the Democratic party was back then. A woman in my group said she voted republican but that she voted on issues and not with the party.
But then she fucked up in my book. She said, “Like the gay issues. Like I don’t want them teaching my son about…” then she whispered, “Homosexuality in kindergarten. He’s five! That’s my job.” Okay, fair enough but then she made the mistake most people who claim they’re not against something but actually are, do. “I don’t have anything against gay people but…”
I had to stop her there. I said, “Let me stop you for a second. If you didn’t have a problem with gay people, there wouldn’t be a ‘but’ at the end of that.”
I think people fail to realize when you add a but, and strongly defend it, you sound more prejudice than you did.
